ESG + BRSR Practitioner Certification
BRSR Core assurance-ready reporting for the sustainability lead who has to file it, not the consultant selling it
A citation-anchored, exam-backed practitioner course on Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting (BRSR) as it operates today for listed companies in India. Not a Big 4 workshop flyover of the format. This course teaches the working quarter: reading a filed BRSR end-to-end, mapping every row in Sections A, B and C to a data owner, running the monthly data-collection calendar from Q1, calculating Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions using the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard with India-specific emission factors, drafting the nine NGRBC policies your Board actually needs to sign, running the BRSR Core verification engagement (choice of reasonable assurance under ICAI Standard SSAE 3410 or assessment under Industry Standards Forum standards, from FY 2025-26), and filing the final XBRL disclosure on the BSE and NSE portals. Includes a template pack the student can lift into their own filing quarter: NGRBC 9-Principle Policy Pack, Data Owner Matrix, Monthly Data Collection Calendar, GHG Scope 1-2-3 Worksheet, Waste Register, Filing Timeline, Board Resolution Adopting BRSR, SSAE 3410 Assurance Engagement Letter, ESG Rating Agency QA Prep.
Written against primary sources current to 29 August 2026 including SEBI Circular 10 May 2021 introducing BRSR, SEBI Circular 12 July 2023 introducing BRSR Core with reasonable assurance rolling out from FY 2023-24 top 150 through FY 2026-27 top 1,000 by market capitalisation, SEBI Circular 28 March 2025 recalibrating the framework (assessment or assurance choice from FY 2025-26, value chain reporting made voluntary, voluntary green credits disclosure, no-conflict-of-interest tightened), the National Guidelines on Responsible Business Conduct 2019 that structure Sections B and C, GHG Protocol Corporate Standard with Scope 2 Guidance 2015 and Scope 3 Standard 2011, ICAI SSAE 3410 for sustainability assurance engagements, Industry Standards Forum (ASSOCHAM, CII, FICCI under the aegis of the stock exchanges) BRSR Core Assessment Standards, and the ISSB IFRS S1 and S2 roadmap that BRSR is expected to align with in the medium term. Cross-check case material against publicly filed BRSRs of Reliance, TCS, Infosys, HDFC Bank, ITC, and L&T. The course pairs naturally with SEBI CSCRF Practitioner for the listed-company cybersecurity overlay and with Companies Act + MCA Practitioner for the Section 134 Board Report and Section 135 CSR overlay that BRSR sits alongside.
What you will learn
- Read a filed BRSR end-to-end, identify which rows are BRSR Core, and diagnose the top eight common assurance findings before an assurance provider does
- Apply Regulation 34(2)(f) LODR and the top 1,000 by market capitalisation threshold to your entity, and track whether you enter or exit the BRSR cohort mid-year
- Draft the nine NGRBC-aligned policies (one per principle) that your Board needs to adopt for a Section B response that survives an assurance walkthrough
- Map every BRSR row in Sections A, B and C to a data owner, an evidence source, and a monthly data-collection cadence
- Calculate Scope 1 direct emissions, Scope 2 electricity emissions using both location-based and market-based methods with CEA emission factors, and Scope 3 upstream and downstream emissions across the 15 GHG Protocol categories
- Compute BRSR intensity ratios correctly (turnover-based, employee-based, revenue-based) so year-on-year comparability holds under assurance
- Calculate Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), fatalities per million hours, and near-miss rates for the Principle 3 safety block
- Run a materiality assessment that generates a Section B-C aligned materiality matrix a rating agency will accept
- Design a BRSR Core assurance engagement under SSAE 3410: engagement letter, evidence pack, sampling approach, provider selection, and independence review
- Prepare the value chain reporting response for the top 250 listed entities under the comply-or-explain framework, and structure the value-chain data collection ahead of assurance from FY 2025-26
- File the final XBRL BRSR on the BSE and NSE portals, reconcile against the audited financial statements, and prepare the Board resolution package for adoption
- Anticipate the IFRS S1 and S2 ISSB transition and start building the climate risk register, scenario analysis, and transition plan disclosures Indian filers will need
Prerequisites
- Working exposure to a listed company annual report and the SEBI (LODR) Regulations 2015 filing cycle — typical for a first-year sustainability lead, an ESG assurance associate, or a CFO-office finance staff member
- Comfort with reading a SEBI Circular and matching it to the LODR Regulation it operationalises
- Working knowledge of the Companies Act 2013 Section 134 Board Report requirements (not deep, just the fact that BRSR forms part of the annual report)
- Access to a filed BRSR of any top 100 listed company (used in worked examples) is helpful
Who this is for
- Sustainability leads and CSR heads at top 1,000 BSE / NSE listed companies preparing the annual BRSR
- ESG assurance associates and managers at Deloitte, EY, KPMG, PwC India, BDO, Grant Thornton, MSKA running SSAE 3410 engagements

BRSR did not appear overnight. It carries fifteen years of policy history that shapes every question in the format and every attribute that goes to assurance. This free-preview module walks through the 2011-to-today journey, the Regulation 34(2)(f) LODR filing trigger, the nine NGRBC principles that structure Sections B and C, and a full read-through of a real filed BRSR.
By the end of this module you will be able to open any filed BRSR of any top-1,000 listed company and know exactly what each row is asking and why. Free preview.
- 1. Why BRSR exists: the fifteen-year policy history 9 min
- 2. Who has to file: Regulation 34(2)(f) and the top-1,000 threshold 8 min
- 3. The nine NGRBC principles that structure Sections B and C 11 min
- 4. Reading a real BRSR: Infosys FY24 walkthrough 14 min
- 5. The BRSR calendar: from Q4 draft to AGM adoption 10 min
Section A looks trivial. It gets read first. Errors in Section A undermine the credibility of everything after it.
This module walks through corporate identity and holding-subsidiary disclosures, HSN-coded product classification, workforce breakdown (permanent vs non-permanent, gender split, differently-abled), the wages column that reconciles with the Wages Code 2019 categories, union membership, turnover, CSR spend under Section 135 of the Companies Act, and the reconciliation checks assurance providers run first when they open a Section A pack.
- 1. Section A opener: corporate identity, listing, reporting boundary 9 min
- 2. Products and services: HSN, NIC, and the conglomerate problem 10 min
- 3. Workforce: permanent, non-permanent, workers versus employees 11 min
- 4. Wages medians: the row assurance providers test hardest 10 min
- 5. Turnover, CSR spend, holding-subsidiary transactions 9 min
Section B is a policy audit dressed as a reporting section. For each of the nine NGRBC principles the format asks whether the company has a policy, whether it covers the value chain, whether it is Board-approved, whether it has been reviewed. This is where the practitioner turns a Section B response into an internal review that stands up in an assurance walkthrough, not a marketing exercise.
Includes the NGRBC 9-Principle Policy Pack template you can lift into your own Board agenda.
- 1. Section B decoded: the yes-no-NA table row by row 10 min
- 2. The nine mini-policies you actually need 11 min
- 3. Grievance mechanisms: one register, nine intake channels 10 min
- 4. Board oversight and committee structure for BRSR 9 min
- 5. Template: the NGRBC 9-Principle Policy Pack 14 min
Section C is where the numbers live. This module walks through the first four principles: Principle 1 ethics and transparency, including where POSH complaints data and Related Party Transaction disclosures live; Principle 2 sustainable and safe products, including R&D expenditure classification and lifecycle-assessment references; Principle 3 employee well-being, including LTIFR calculation and safety training hours; and Principle 4 stakeholder engagement, including a materiality assessment methodology and the materiality matrix template.
- 1. Principle 1: ethics, transparency, accountability 11 min
- 2. Principle 2: sustainable and safe products 10 min
- 3. Principle 3: employee well-being and the LTIFR calculation 12 min
- 4. Principle 4: stakeholder engagement and materiality assessment 11 min
The heavy environmental and human-rights disclosures live in Principles 5 to 9. This module walks through human rights complaints and forced-labour disclosures, GHG Scope 1, 2 and 3 accounting with worked examples using CEA emission factors, water withdrawal and discharge, waste categorised by CPCB Rules, policy advocacy transparency, CSR alignment with Principle 8, and Principle 9 customer value including the crossover with DPDP data breach reporting and product recall disclosures.
- 1. Principle 5: human rights 10 min
- 2. Principle 6 part one: GHG emissions Scope 1, 2 and 3 14 min
- 3. Principle 6 part two: water, energy, waste, biodiversity, air, EPR 12 min
- 4. Principle 7: policy advocacy 9 min
- 5. Principles 8 and 9: inclusive growth and customer value 11 min
BRSR Core is the subset of BRSR disclosures identified by SEBI Circular 12 July 2023 as key ESG attributes that require third-party assurance. This module walks through the Circular clause by clause, the nine BRSR Core attributes and their intensity-ratio calculations, the limited vs reasonable assurance distinction under ICAI SSAE 3410, the assurance provider selection matrix (ICAI empanelled sustainability assurance practitioner vs Big 4 sustainability practice), and the eight common assurance findings that get qualified in first-time engagements and how to prevent them.
- 1. What BRSR Core is and why it exists: Circular 12 July 2023 clause by clause 11 min
- 2. The nine BRSR Core attributes and their intensity ratios 12 min
- 3. Verification mechanics: SSAE 3410 assurance vs ISF assessment, and how to choose 12 min
- 4. Verification provider selection: SSAE 3410 assurance providers and ISF-empanelled assessors 13 min
- 5. The eight common assurance findings and how to prevent them 13 min
BRSR fails on data collection, not on writing. This module builds the operating layer: a data owner matrix that maps every row in Sections A, B and C to a department and role; a monthly data collection calendar that runs Q1 through Q4 with owner sign-offs; a GHG Scope 1-2-3 worksheet with worked example inputs from a mid-size Indian manufacturer; a water withdrawal-consumption-discharge register; a waste register categorised by CPCB Rules. Every template is embedded in the lesson and can be lifted into a live filing quarter.
- 1. The Data Owner Matrix: mapping every BRSR row to a name 14 min
- 2. The Monthly Data Collection Calendar: Q1 through Q4 with owner sign-offs 12 min
- 3. GHG Scope 1-2-3 Worksheet: worked example for a mid-size Indian manufacturer 15 min
- 4. Water and energy accounting: withdrawal, consumption, discharge, intensity 11 min
- 5. Waste accounting by CPCB category: the Waste Register template 14 min
The delivery quarter. This module walks the BRSR from Q4 draft through internal audit sign-off, Board approval, the SSAE 3410 assurance engagement, the final XBRL upload to BSE and NSE portals, and post-filing engagement with ESG rating agencies. Includes the value chain reporting response for the top 250 listed entities under the comply-or-explain framework, and a forward-looking chapter on the IFRS S1 and S2 ISSB transition that Indian filers should start preparing for now.
- 1. The BRSR filing timeline: month by month from Q4 to next-year AGM 10 min
- 2. Internal audit sign-off and Board approval: the resolution your Company Secretary needs 9 min
- 3. Drafting the SSAE 3410 assurance engagement letter 11 min
- 4. The XBRL filing: BSE Listing Centre and NSE NEAPS portal mechanics 9 min
- 5. Value chain reporting: now voluntary, and why sensible top 250 filers still disclose 11 min
- 6. Post-filing: ESG rating agency engagement and question preparation 10 min
- 7. The IFRS S1 and S2 ISSB transition roadmap: what Indian filers should be doing now 11 min

This course is a paid practitioner training programme aimed at working sustainability leads, CSR heads, ESG assurance associates, CFO-office finance staff, Company Secretaries, and internal auditors operating under SEBI (LODR) Regulations 2015 and the BRSR framework as recalibrated by SEBI Circular SEBI/HO/CFD/CFD-PoD-1/P/CIR/2025/42 dated 28 March 2025 (assessment or assurance choice for BRSR Core verification, voluntary value chain disclosure, voluntary green credits disclosure, no-conflict-of-interest for verification providers). Every substantive claim is anchored to a primary source: SEBI Circular reference and date, LODR Regulation number, MCA Notification, IFRS S1 / S2 paragraph, ICAI Standard, ISF BRSR Core Assessment Standard, CPCB Rule, or a specific publicly filed BRSR. Items flagged as UNVERIFIED in the lesson prose are pending re-verification against the current primary source and must be checked before the student acts on them in a live filing. The course maintains a 15-item verification checklist covering BRSR Core rollout dates, value chain reporting scope (per 28 March 2025 Circular), IFRS S1 and S2 adoption pathway, ICAI SSAE 3410 revisions, ISF Assessment Standard revisions, and post-January 2026 SEBI Circular amendments.
This is not legal, tax, audit, or assurance advice and does not create a professional-client relationship. For specific compliance decisions, consult a SEBI-registered ESG rating provider, an ICAI-empanelled sustainability assurance practitioner or ISF-empanelled BRSR Core assessor, or a listed-company compliance officer.
